Alcohol abuse statistics demonstrate the fact that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Numerous substance abuse experts emphasize the point that alcohol advertisements brought into being by the media are a primary reason for the expansion of teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcoholism consultants assert that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and ease of access of wine, liquor, and beer in our society.
Still other alcoholism specialists stress the point that more than a few of our adolescents engage in excessive drinking due to the increased apprehension that they face.
From a slightly different vantage point, because both parents in quite a few families work full or part-time, the lack of parental supervision positively has to play a fundamental part in the expansion of adolescent alcohol abuse. And finally, various alcohol addiction professionals state that the increase in teenage alcohol abuse is due, in some measure, to our lenient society.
Alcohol Abuse and Coping Skills Education
One facet of teenage alcohol abuse that appears to be somewhat incomplete in the substance abuse research literature, in spite of this, is the paucity of educational courses that teach adolescents how to enhance their coping skills so that their dangerous drinking behavior is drastically reduced or gotten rid of.
More to the point, science has revealed that there is an indirect connection between poor coping skills and alcohol abuse. In essence, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the greater the incidence of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a correct argument, why isn’t coping skills education a significant part of the educational prospectus in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?
A Society That Puts Emphasis On Adolescent Coping Skills
Let us manufacture a scenario for the purpose of clarification. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are taught how to develop good coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school.
In such a society, when life gets challenging, students who are ”coping skills experts” will be able to respond in a more healthy and more rewarding manner, as opposed to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into practice.
Stated another way, students who exhibit solid coping skills will be more able to think logically and exhibit top quality decision making as opposed to students who, because they do not possess good coping skills, are attracted to the “quick fix” of abusive drinking.
What would happen in the above “ideal” society, furthermore, if young people not only received top shelf coping skills education but also received an outstanding education that emphasized the short term and long term injurious outcomes associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these drug and alcohol abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills instruction, it is declared, would help teens stay away from the clear appeal related to youth drinking and, consequently, would drastically diminish the alcohol abuse displayed by teens in our country.
Adolescent Abusive Drinking: Conclusion
There are surely quite a few sound reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in a destructive manner. Such a thorny subject matter demands a thorough and more applicable educational and preventative response by our politicians, parents, educators, and students so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life’s problems in a more rewarding and accountable way rather than resorting to injurious drinking behavior to solve their problems.

What are the key features in an effective alcohol intervention? Why do some alcohol interventions go well while more than a few flop?
The Need for a Time-Honored Track Record of Intervention Accomplishment
Scientific exploration makes evident the fact that a successful alcoholism intervention needs to be supervised by an intervention professional who has a celebrated history of intervention achievement.
Essentially this means that instead of deciding upon an “average” alcohol dependency healthcare practitioner or psychotherapist for an alcohol intervention, the person who is selected to manage the intervention needs to be trained in alcohol intervention methods and needs to have a reputation of successful alcohol addiction interventions.
A Few Primary Illustrations of The Most Optimal Time For an Alcohol Abuse Intervention
Scientific examination has also revealed that the most advantageous time for an alcoholism intervention is following a consequential event in the life of the alcoholic or hazardous drinker. The following represents a few illustrations of these kinds of significant happenings:
- The alcohol addicted person or alcohol abuser has been caught stealing something of value
- The abusive drinker or alcohol dependent individual has been caught lying about something of importance
- The alcohol dependent individual or abusive drinker has been placed behind bars for a DWI or DUI.
In events like these, the alcohol dependent individual or alcohol abuser is more apt to be remorseful or to feel guilty, thusly making him or her more willing to get the quality alcohol rehab that is necessary.
At this time, moreover, it is also important to mention that the alcohol abuser or alcohol dependent individual needs to be alcohol-free during the alcohol dependency intervention. In sum, if the abusive drinker or alcohol addicted individual is intoxicated during an alcohol addiction intervention, failure is in effect guaranteed.
Additionally, scientific exploration has also revealed the fact that the abusive drinker or alcoholic has to at least try to listen to what is said in an alcoholism intervention. That is, during an alcohol addiction intervention, the abusive drinker or alcohol-dependent person needs to listen to what his or her drinking difficulties have done to those who care for him or her the most.
The Significance of Alcohol Rehab For the Irresponsible Drinker
And lastly, scientific study reveals that the major reason for an alcohol abuse intervention in the first place is to convince the hazardous drinker or alcohol-dependent person to get the quality alcohol abuse rehabilitation he or she requires. Stated more accurately, even if the person who directs the intervention has an outstanding reputation of fruitful interventions and even if the alcohol abuser or alcohol dependent individual frankly listens to every word that is articulated all through an intervention, if the abusive drinker or alcohol dependent individual is not motivated to request quality alcohol rehab after the alcohol intervention, then the intervention will be a failure.
Clearly all of these factors are needed for a successful alcoholism intervention. If, conversely, the hazardous drinker or alcohol addicted individual is not encouraged to get alcohol dependency treatment after listening to his or her family members express the grief, wrath, and displeasure they feel about the alcohol abuser’s or alcohol dependent individual’s hazardous drinking behavior and the affection they feel for the problem drinker, then every other phase of the alcohol dependency intervention will more or less be inconsequential.
Even Effective Alcoholism Interventions Can Fail to Go As Planned Down the Road
It also needs to be noted that notwithstanding the fact that the alcoholism intervention can be identified as fruitful in that it helped put the abusive drinker or alcohol dependent individual in a more receptive state of mind and genuinely helped the alcohol dependent individual or alcohol abuser conclude that he or she required alcohol therapy or professional help for alcoholism or alcohol abuse, the mere fact that the intervention happened may result in bitterness, irritation, and skepticism down the road.
In a word, even when alcohol dependency interventions are seen as productive in the short term, in the long run, alternatively, they may backfire and, for that reason, may make the family and/or the alcohol addicted person’s situation even worse than it was before the alcohol abuse intervention took place.
No matter how unjust or odd this seems, try to keep in mind that it is essentially one of the key alcohol facts that has to be tackled when doing an alcohol intervention.

A Young Man Decides to See His Family Doctor About His Alcoholism Symptoms
Posted on 22. Jun, 2009 by Editor.
Larry finally made up his mind to go and see his healthcare professional about his drinking problems. At first, Larry thought he would be able to essentially go on the Internet, look for some fundamental alcohol info, and establish whether or not he was dependent on alcohol. Not unexpectedly, he located quite a few websites that itemized some of the general alcoholism symptoms. That’s the encouraging news. The bad news, unfortunately, was that Larry manifested many of these alcoholism symptoms.
Alcoholism Symptoms: Some Illustrations
As a case in point, Larry was drinking significantly more than customary and he was beginning to have more intense squabbles with his wife. Moreover, for the first time in his young life he was suffering through sleeping difficulties. Similarly, Larry regularly felt depressed and on an ever increasing basis he had been displaying limited attention to detail at work.
What is more, he felt stressed out and more jumpy on a daily basis and for the past two or three months he manifested questionable thinking at his place of employment. Seeing as Larry demonstrated all of these symptoms, he was excusably concerned about his irresponsible drinking.
So Larry finally determined that he needed to make a phone call to his family healthcare practitioner and make an appointment. As a matter of fact, this was hard for Larry because his healthcare professional was also his parents’ healthcare practitioner. The root of his distress was this: at the risk of embarrassing his family, he had to go and expose his careless and hazardous drinking behavior to his healthcare professional.
When Larry arrived at the healthcare practitioner’s office, he plainly notified the family healthcare practitioner about the fear he felt about his irresponsible drinking behavior. When the physician asked what was setting off this anxiety, Larry stated that he had gone online and read about alcoholism and especially about alcohol dependency symptoms. He then stated all of the alcoholism symptoms that he obviously thought he had.
An In Depth Physical Assessment and Outpatient Alcohol Treatment
The family doctor notified Larry that it was intelligent of him to concentrate on his drinking difficulties, he gave Larry a complete physical exam, and recommended that he register in an out-patient alcohol treatment program that was supervised by one of his doctor friends.
Furthermore, when Larry mentioned that he had been feeling depressed more often, the family doctor notified Larry that alcoholism and depression often crop up in the same person. Accordingly, the family healthcare practitioner also suggested that Larry seek counseling to tackle his despair.
The Merit of Addressing Your Drinking Issues
The healthcare practitioner made it a point to notify Larry that he might not necessarily be alcohol dependent, but that he was plainly drinking in an excessive manner. The family doctor then notified Larry that the reason he suggested alcohol treatment in the first place was because he wanted him to sort out his drinking issues, make sure that he prevented them from escalating, and start to live in a more healthy manner, even if it meant that he had to completely stop drinking.
Briefly, by successfully treating his drinking difficulties, Larry would be able to get his drinking issues under control and abstain from the negative cycle of events that could in all probability lead to addiction to alcohol.
Evidently, Larry did not want to face the thought of enrolling in an alcohol rehab facility. Nor was he euphoric about going to a therapist about his despair. Regardless of these fears, on the other hand, Larry in fact experienced some emotional relief for the first time in quite a few months because he eventually stopped making excuses for himself and at long last decided to do something productive about his drinking difficulties.
